12/3/2011: Cahuilla Lodge conducted
our first of two scheduled Vigil ceremonies to induct
our twelve nominated Lodge Vigil Honor Members for 2011.
Seven of the Lodges twelve candidates arrived up at
Emerson Friday evening in the cold prepared to
experience their Vigil this past weekend, December 2-3,
2011. Lead by the Cahuilla Chief, Ian McLeod, and our
Lodge First Vice Chief, John Garcia, Lodge Vigil
candidates prepared to experience the highest honor
bestowed by the Lodge, the Vigil Honor. Limited numbers
of Arrowmen can be nominated by fellow Arrowman with
nominations reviewed and selected by the Lodge Chief and
his Lodge Executive Leadership. The Vigil is the highest
honor beginning with Arrowman and Brotherhood Honor
Member, and is the only membership position which the
Arrowman must be nominated and selected by their peers
in the Order of the Arrow. The Vigil Honor Member
exemplifies best the principles of character and service
to all.
As the sun rose on Saturday morning over a brisk and
cold Camp Emerson, the Lodge inducted and welcomed seven
of our 2011 Vigil candidates. We are proud of the Lodges
newest Vigil Honor Members, and look forward to our
second Vigil Honor Ceremony scheduled for January 6-7,
2012 at Camp Emerson when the Lodge and Chief will
induct our final five candidates.

7/16/2011: "On July 16, 2011 three
brave souls from Wanakik (and one from Navajo) embarked
on a perilous journey to build trails leading to The
Summit in West Virginia. They weaved their way through
Carmagedon terrified at the sight of trafficless LA
freeways. Were forced to survive on airline peanuts,
pretzels, Coca-Cola Products, a layover in Atlanta and
McDonalds to make it to New Gorge National Park, West
Virginia. While there, crews worked in record breaking
heat (91-101 degrees F), 80-100% humidity and Philmont
trail food to create the first Moutain Bike trail system
in any National Park. They lived through pioneer
clearing, hornet's nests, rock moving, and one bad
lightening storm (Camp was evacuated). All along showing
why "Snakepower" can outwork the Cog (Wiatava was our
traveling buddies). The trip home found them up at 5am
(2 am in California) scrambling to clean-up tents and
make a flight to Detroit. They returned to California
victorious on July 23rd to 79 degrees F with 63%
humidity. AHHH it was nice. Good job Ian, Seth, Jared,
and Summer. You made the Wanakik (and Navajo) chapter
proud." P.S. Thanks Ken for hauling our gear.
On July 16 seven members of Cahuilla Lodge’s dance
and drum team, Deer Run Singers, travelled to the Balboa
Park in San Diego to serve as the instructors for Tiwahe
Lodge’s Native American Day. Nearly 40 OA members from
the San Diego Imperial Council attended the day’s
activities.
After the opening ceremony the participants were
split into 3 separate groups to attend a round robin of
instruction classes. Chase Hadden, Cameron Stiede, John
Garcia, Curtis Stiede, and Lucas Stiede all formed
temporary drum groups to teach the participants
different drum songs and traditions. Cameron Locke
taught a class on men’s northern traditional dancing and
James Hermes taught a class on how to grass dance.
After lunch everyone came together for a small pow
wow type gathering. This was their chance to put into
practice what they had learned that morning. Each of the
drum instructors joined a temporary drum group to help
them sing during the afternoon gathering. A few brave
Scouts donned some of the dance regalia and joined the
dancing in the arena. The gathering was concluded by
holding a few social dances and a broom dance
competition. The whole day was an incredibly fun
experience and the OA members from Tiwahe Lodge were a
great group to work with. For everyone that attended it
was definitely one of the highlights to a great summer.
4/24/2011: Easter Sunrise
Service.
The Mt. Rubidoux District came together again this year
on Easter weekend to prepare Mt. Rubidoux for the Easter
Sunrise Service. On the Saturday before Easter, scouts
and scouters alike ascend the hill, tools in hand to
clean and repair the trails for the early morning
service. Almost every Troop and Pack in the district
comes out and does their service for the City of
Riverside . There were even some Girl Scouts present.
The cleaning of the trails on Saturday and the lighting
on Sunday, (which starts at 4am ) were attended by over
400 scouts and produced over 1200 hours of service. The
Wanakik chapter of the Order of the Arrow who oversees
the project wants to thank everyone involved for their
cheerful service.
