Shadow Lodge Singers: A Legacy of Success and Achievement
This page commemorates the Shadow Lodge Drum Team, which was active from 1993-1998. The drum team competed at
several NOACs and finished as high as 2nd place overall.
What started out as an idea by Rusty Shoemake became Red Thunder, the team's first incarnation as a Northern-Style
Drum Team. Their first exposure to the Lodge was performing at the 1993 Fall Fellowship. Most of the kids were
still very young and their voices were high-pitched, making them very unique.
At the 1994 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC)at Purdue University, their performace even caught the
attention of several interested judges. One judge even joined the group and performed with the kids, indeed a
great honor. They placed 5th at the NOAC, but were the second-highest rated Northern-style drum team.
Eventually, it came to their attention that several other singing teams in the country were using the name, "Red
Thunder," so the team renamed themselves the Shadow Lodge singers. By this time, the team had matured and their
performances seemed to be more and more breathtaking every day. They performed at Pow Wows, Council Scouting
events, and Order of the Arrow events like the W4B Section Conclave and Cahuilla Lodge Fall Fellowship.
In 1998, the team would place second at the NOAC, the best performance for a drum team in Cahuilla Lodge history.
It was truly a momentous week as two members, Dustin Shoemake and Danny Souza, both became national champions in
dancing (Grass Dance and Northern-Traditional, respectively).
By the time though, the team had grown older and moved on to other aspects of life. Several went off to school
or moved to other states. At the same time, to carry on the legacy left by the Shadow Lodge singers, the Morningstar
Singers drum team was formed and is active today.
